Anyone who has viewed episodes of “Mad Men” on television has witnessed the characters in their offices or board rooms discussing business while partaking of scotch or whiskey on the rocks. It is unproven that such imbibing was standard office protocol in the sixties, the era in which the show is set, but it seems to be a new trend now among some places of employment.
Drinking at Work
According Christian Schappel’s article, “Companies Say ‘Cheers!’ to Drinking on the Job”, some companies, particularly some companies in the Silicon Valley, such as Yelp, Incorporated, Tello, Incorporated, Crowd Flower, and Twitter, allow drinking alcohol on the job.
It’s not unusual for employees of such companies to work late into the night. Because of the long, late-night hours, such companies are attempting to bring nightlife into the office environment so that their employees can better achieve a more satisfactory work and social life balance. Kegs, refrigerators stocked with beer and wine, and taking shots of whiskey are becoming a trend in such cutting-edge companies.
