For years AR-15 type rifles have been a common sight in the hands of military and police personnel but only recently have the "black rifles" been seen entering the woods with hunters. This is controversial among hunters, however, the AR-15’s reliability and versatility lends it to be a supreme hunting rifle.

When it comes to the AR-15, reliability is a designed trait. The AR-15 platform is no exception. These weapons function even in the harshest conditions and have thousands of rounds shot through them throughout their service careers. A hunter, even a rough and tumble one, probably will not subject an AR-15 to the type of rigors that it will see on the battlefield and thus will have a weapon that will operate reliably for years. The biggest problem faced with AR-15 type rifles is that in order for them to operate at maximum performance they must be clean and well lubricated. The gas impingement operation system used in most of these rifles tends to get dirty quickly and requires regular cleaning .
