This is partly a personal story; but I'd really like to begin a serious and wide-ranging dialogue on the subject of performance enhancement in sports. It's something every athlete knows about: you get a boost from what you consume, or inject, or modify by invasive surgery.

I guess you'd say i led a sheltered life: never smoked, never drank more than a beer (after that unfortunate night as a freshman in college), never took pills---never even drank coffee, except for a cup once a month or so. But I did have a clue, because sometimes my monthly coffee was a Vietnamese ice coffee to go with my pho (if you've never had pho or Vietnamese ice coffee, then it's YOU who have led the sheltered life).

What I noticed was that after drinking a Vietnamese ice coffee, which is, to put it euphemistically, rather robust, I could not sleep. I would walk around and talk to myself, and feel full of energy. Why it never dawned on me to use this in sporting endeavors, I simply cannot say, except to mention that you never hear an athlete say he owes all his success to caffeine.
