A cover letter is a vital part of the job application process yet often overlooked in comparison to a resume. In fact a covering letter can make the difference between getting an interview or being rejected. Those not confident in writing may find a sample cover letter helpful when drafting a professional letter.

Writing a Good Cover Letter

A cover letter must be unique, tailored to the job and portray you in the best light. Most employers will recognize cover letter templates. Ideally it should read as a clear explanation of why you should be hired. The covering letter is a prospective employer's first impression of you and should be written professionally. There is no set way to write a cover letter but it is a good idea to try and plan out the structure so that you get your point across succinctly:

A cover letter should fulfill certain objectives. Ensure that you address the following:

  • Explain why you are sending a resume;
  • Convince the company to look at your resume;
  • Reflect your attitude, motivation and communication skills; and
  • Indicate what will be done to follow-up.

The first paragraph should be an introduction, and mention the job you’re applying for and where you saw it advertised. The second paragraph can detail relevant skills and experience, and the final paragraph should include how you intend to follow up on the letter.
