Pro-marijuana supporters have argued relentlessly that marijuana (also known as cannabis) is a “safe” drug; particularly when compared to harder drugs and notably, alcohol. In fact, while alcohol is freely and legally available, many believe that it is a much more dangerous and detrimental substance than marijuana.
The Dangers of Alcohol Abuse
After an exhaustive and intense investigation, a special Canadian Senate Committee on Illegal Drugs report (parl.gc.ca September 2002, accessed August 2010) found that “evidence overwhelmingly indicates that marijuana is substantially less harmful than alcohol”. Further to this, The Beckley Foundation's Global Cannabis Commission report (September 2008, accessed August 2010) on drug use maintains that historically there have only been “two deaths worldwide attributed to cannabis, whereas alcohol and tobacco together are responsible for an estimated 150,000 deaths per annum in the UK alone”.
The risks and side effects of drinking alcohol excessively include alcohol poisoning, liver damage, asphyxiation (by vomit), brain damage, and cardiac arrest. Furthermore, continuous consumption of alcohol on a regular basis, may also lead to a heavy reliance and addiction known as alcoholism. It’s undeniable that such results consequently have a detrimental effect on many national resources; but what of marijuana? If a legalized substance such as alcohol causes so many problems, then surely a criminalized drug is much more hazardous?
