The first Tuesday in November saw another contentious mid-term election – Republicans making a decisive power grab in the House while the Democrats closed their eyes and held on tight to the Senate. With all the Tea Party hype and the fear of a potentially disastrous day for the Democratic majority, perhaps the most intriguing vote of all was coming from California in the form of Proposition 19 marijuana legalization. The much-talked-about vote gained national media attention and was viewed as a barometer of sorts, to gauge the potential for nationwide legalization. Of course, it was voted down and legalization hopes were dashed for at least another two years.
The reasons why Prop 19 was voted down are many- some more complex than others- but most of these issues can be resolved by the elections in 2012. For those who feel that Marijuana Prohibition is an antiquated law that remains on the books because of health hazards and possible violent criminal behavior as a result of its use, in spite of commonly known contemporary knowledge to the contrary, fear not! For there is a way to release your beloved plant from the punishing grip of government tyranny; the bad news is that it will take organization and planning ahead. These are traits typically difficult to come by in a marijuana enthusiast — not as common as say knowledge of shows on Cartoon Network or an ability to collect vast amounts take-out menus — but it can be done.
Why was 19 voted down and what changes can be made to give legalization a fighting chance in 2012?
